Course Requirements
- Academic Honesty This is the most important requirement that I expect from the students of this course. This means, first of all, that you should not deceive yourself and me during the exams by copying from your friends or from any other source (course materials, hand-written sheets, etc.). Such an act will result in your exam paper to be graded as zero (without any chance of a make-up exam) and disciplinary action. Second, you are expected to write only your own name on the attendance sheets. Failure to do otherwise will result in losing 5 points straight both from you and from that person whose name you put on the attendance sheet.
- Midterm exam, 35% of your grade.
- Assignments and Recitations 25% of your grade. You are required to write 5 short essays. Four of these essays will be on four fılms (Die Welle, Metropolis, Navigators, Darwin’s Nightmare) related to the substance of the ideologies we will be covering. The remaining one essay will on social democracy in Turkey. For this assignment, you are expected to choose one central issue within social democracy and conduct a mini-research to examine to what extent the issue of your choice is dealt with in the official documents of the Republican Peoples Party. You are expected to upload your essays to Turn-it-in program about which you will be informed about our assistants. It is absolutely mandatory to upload your essays by the announced deadline. Please beware that late submissions will be not be evaluated. Following each essay submission, there will be five recitation hours where you will be discussing the themes of the essays.
- Final Exam 35% of your grade.
- Attendance 5% of your grade (to be checked by the sign-up sheets distributed in class). Students who did not attend 60% of the classes at the end of the semester cannot enter the final examination and get NA grade from the course.
